How to take better notes [Lesson 1/7]

And before diving deeper into Lesson #1,let me just set the right expectations.

I've been taking notes for the last decade and made a ton of mistakes. (And still counting.)

So in my emails, you're going to learn lessons I've learned the hard way (so you don't have to.)

Let's start with a painful confession:

I've been taking notes the stupid way for years.

The reason? I didn't know better.

When thinking about it, I was just wasting my time.

I've consumed so much content (books, courses, podcasts, etc.), that finally led to nothing to show for.

It was a strange feeling.

Because I felt being productive. I felt like I was learning.

Indeed, I saw my numbers of notes grow, week after week.

Indeed, I was collecting more and more interesting ideas, quotes, etc.

But at the same time?

I felt that strange feeling of not making significant progress.

(At least, not as much as I think I would deserve).

I found myself being an "A-player" in putting notes into my system.

But my output was terrible.

Let me explain further:

I'm a content creator. I rely on Ideas to run my business.

Ideas are the backbone of everything I do.

Poor ideas = Poor content = Poor income.

All the ideas I've taken over the years were supposed to be in a safe place inside my note-taking apps.

(Yes, appS – plural. I will dig deeper into that in further lessons.)

And yet, this was the problem.

I found myself being an idea collector.

Collector, did I say?

Yes: Someone who's just

collecting

ideas.

But the truth is, nothing happens when you collect ideas.

Nobody pays you to collect ideas.

Instead, it's what you DO with those ideas that actually matter.

Don't be a note-taker, be a note-maker.

Someone who uses his notes pro-actively to create something in the world.

We are going to dig deeper into this paradigm later on the course,

but for now, here's an important question that you have to ask yourself:

What is YOUR purpose of taking notes?

This is a crucial question.

I'm asking this question to every prospect who wants to work with me.

Why?

Because the answer to this question will determine your outcome.

If you don't know the WHY, all the rest is irrelevant.

Because I didn't understand my "why" I was doomed to failure.

For years, my "why" was "I want to retrieve ideas and never lose them again."

Funny thing? So did I act!

If my "why" were clear since the beginning (and if I knew what you're going to discover in tomorrow's lesson) –

I would not have wasted a decade into taking notes like the stupid way.

So here's your homework for today:

Reply to this email by telling me WHY you want to take better notes.

You may be telling yourself:

"Meh – this is a useless engagement-gimmick. I already know why!".

But I assure you it's not.

Remember this Lewis Carroll quote in "Alice in Wonderland":

"If you don't know where you are going

any

road can take you there."

So let's start with where do you want to go.

By taking the time to pause everything you're doing for 2 or 3 minutes,

asking yourself this simple question – and most importantly–,

WRITING IT DOWN, you're going to realize that it will open up new horizons.

생각해보니, 그냥 시간낭비를 하고 있었어요.

저는 너무 많은 콘텐츠(책, 강좌, 팟캐스트 등)를 소비해서 결국 아무것도 보여줄 수 없었습니다.

이상한 느낌이었어요.

생산적이라고 느꼈기 때문입니다.

배우고 있는 것 같았어요.

실제로, 저는 노트 수가 매주 증가하는 것을 보았습니다.

실제로, 저는 점점 더 흥미로운 아이디어, 인용문 등을 수집하고 있었습니다.

하지만 동시에요?

큰 진전이 없다는 이상한 느낌을 받았습니다.

(적어도, 제가 받을 자격이 있다고 생각하는 만큼은 아닙니다.)

저는 제 시스템에 노트를 넣는 "A-player"라는 것을 알게 되었습니다.

하지만 제 생산량은 형편없었어요.

대신, 그 아이디어로 무엇을 하느냐가 실제로 중요합니다.

메모하는 사람이 되지 말고 메모하는 사람이 되세요.

자신의 노트를 적극적으로 사용하여 세상을 창조하는 사람이죠

이 패러다임에 대해서는 나중에 더 자세히 알아보겠습니다.

하지만 지금, 여기 여러분이 스스로에게 물어봐야 할 중요한 질문이 있습니다.

필기를 하는 목적은 무엇입니까?

이것은 매우 중요한 질문입니다.

저는 저와 함께 일하고 싶은 모든 잠재 고객에게 이 질문을 하고 있습니다.

왜요?

이 질문에 대한 답이 당신의 결과를 좌우할 것이기 때문입니다.

만약 당신이 그 이유를 모른다면, 나머지는 상관없습니다.

제 "왜"를 이해하지 못했기 때문에 저는 실패할 운명이었습니다.

몇 년 동안, 제 "왜"는 "아이디어를 되찾고 싶고 다시는 잃어버리지 않고 싶다"였습니다."

웃기다고요? 저도 연기했어요!

제 "왜"가 처음부터 분명했다면 (그리고 내일 수업에서 무엇을 발견하게 될 지 안다면)-

저는 바보 같은 방식으로 필기를 하는 데 10년을 낭비하지 않았을 것입니다.
